"A good road is a living, total work that arises from a vision, which demands impeccable professional skill in its designer, as well as the ability to understand and create aesthetic landscape totalities." Martti I. Jaatinen, Architect

In 2019, I spent a week driving around Isle of Skye, Scotland. The roads are often single lane, with passing places spaced out along the narrow roads to allow two vehicles to safely pass. Roads - good roads - facilitate our movement into the unknown, grant permission for the landscape to turn into aesthetic objects before our eyes. Yet they are also a break in the land, a means by which human traffic can penetrate into the wilderness and claim the uncertainty as our own. Passing places reduce the need for roads larger than they need to be. They allow us the space to navigate our desire to explore while giving the earth the dignity of minimal intervention.
